I have been letting my children develop spelling lists of their own using words they misspell in their writing, on a pretest I give, or words that follow our phonics focus of the week.
One of our more recent lessons was on making words that end in y into plurals. For example:
city --> cities
lady --> ladies
penny --> pennies
Monday is the day the kids take the spelling pretest and then create their list for the week. Somehow, those sneaky boys of mine remembered the y --> ies rule for all the words except pennies. They had a rather interesting spelling error when attempting that word. And I am not convinced it was accidental. Thankfully, the lists were checked before going home that day!
Later in the week, I had the students write a sentence for each word. I've been pushing them to write more interesting sentences that include more that 4 words. Some of their sentences were still short, but they were also quite interesting...
"All kitties like to be fat."
"A bunch of ladies in the club tonight."
"I'm grinning so hard my jaw hurts."
"All the cute ladies come to me."
"Ms Mikyla simplifies our work. #thanks"
" 'Sup ladies, wanna join me in the bath tub?"

That last sentence was written by a student who spent three days last week carrying around a stuffed walrus. I even caught him talking to it a few times. Kids sure do grow up fast...
