Way back in November I went to Vilnius for the weekend!
It's a three and half hour drive of nothing. I mean nothing. I was quite surprised to see that the main route from one capital city to another was actually just a two-lane road. We finally stopped at a Hesburger for some food and a bathroom break. Then continued our drive of nothing but blackness at 4:45pm (No cities, no lights. It was like back country driving at midnight.)
Arriving in Vilnius was great, mostly just because it felt like a return to civilization!
The apartment we stayed in was right in a great location and super cozy! The weekend ended up being quite rainy and coming off of parent-student-teacher conferences, none of us were particularly motivated to be out and about a lot.
We had some drinks and dinner at a tapas place on Friday. Then eventually braved the rain for some brunch on Saturday. We also spent a few hours shopping in H&M... because we never do that in Riga :p
We didn't really see the city, because it was raining and we were sissies about it. Also, it's only a few hours away so there is always the chance of return trip.
On Sunday we packed up earlier and went to IKEA. We really went to Vilnius just for the IKEA (hehe). It was pretty much the same as an IKEA anywhere. Tons of adorable design and decor ideas that have you convinced you need to redo the entire house or apartment! I settled on cute Christmas decorations and lots of candles.
Then came the return trip. Our early start meant we would be driving in daylight almost all the way home. We saw so much more then... not really. Still a lot of open space.
A lot.
